The center also collaborates with private consultants and companies to enhance quality of research results, and research results delivery and implementation process. The center collaborates with research centers and individual researchers nationally and internationally. The studies conducted by the center integrate field studies, laboratory testing and analytical simulation to understand complex phenomena that result in aging and deterioration of transportation infrastructure. The center evaluates the materials, design, construction, repair and maintenance of highway structures in harsh climates to improve their durability and prolong service life. The continued cooperative efforts between MDOT and WMU also help ensure that the transportation leaders of the future will be prepared to meet the many challenges that lie ahead. The partnership allows MDOT to remain engaged in helping to shape the future of transportation in Michigan, nationally and internationally. The Michigan Department of Transportation established the Research Center of Excellence on Structural Durability at Western Michigan University to partner with MDOT in performing applied research, providing education and performing outreach.
